Violence Prevention in the Early Years
Honolulu, Saturday, July 31st, 2004
This INTERMEDIATE workshop is based on the ACT Against Violence Training program
developed by the American Psychological Association (APA) in collaboration with
the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) with assistance
from experts in child development, violence prevention, and early childhood
education. ACT is a national anti-violence initiative emphasizing the importance
of early prevention and the role of adults in children’s lives and learning
environment.
The purpose of this workshop is to prepare APA members to disseminate the
program research-based knowledge and skills on early violence prevention to
adults in their communities. This workshop will provide participants with an
overview of major topics on early childhood violence prevention including review
of: (a) ACT as a social cognitive intervention; (b) young children and violence,
roots and consequences; (c) prevention skills such as anger management and media
violence; and (d) ways to be involved with ACT in the community.
This workshop is for those who are interested in early childhood and violence
prevention, those who work as consultants, administrators, or staff with organizations
or agencies that provide services for families and/or children, and for those
who are involved in violence prevention in their community. This is an important
workshop for members who want to be involved with a research-based initiative
developed by their professional association.
